What is your gym persona?

Stepping into a gym can be like walking into another world! It is easy to see why so many people are intimidated or put off by the many gym persona’s! That initial scan of the room when you first walk through the doors can really open your eyes. I remember the first time I started regularly training in a commercial gym and I’ll be honest, these persona’s haven’t changed much in the past 15 years. Obvs bar the self addicts! Unfortunately the Nokia 3210 didn’t quite have the selfie capacity back then!

The Grunter:

Ah, the Grunter. This magnificent creature can be heard from miles away. With every rep, they emit primal grunts and groans that make you question if they’re lifting weights or summoning the ancient gym deities. While their intensity is admirable, it’s hard not to stifle a giggle when they unleash their thunderous symphony. Embarrassingly, my husband falls into this category! If he’s ever in the gym when my daughter and I go in, we pretend we don’t know him. (Yep, its that bad)

The Fashionista:

Picture a runway in the middle of the gym, and you’ll find the Fashionista strutting their stuff. Or in the case of my daughter, the stepper! High enough that she can scan the gym floor. Working at a level high enough that she looks like she is working out, but not too high that she might actually sweat into her Nike Pro combo! Yes, the fashionista is dressed head to toe in the latest designer athleisure wear, they make you wonder if they’re more interested in a fashion show than a workout. (Yes, I am jealous and bitter haha). Their perfectly coordinated outfits and flawless hair give off the illusion that they woke up like this. Unlike me in my trusted old comfy leggings (Nike i might add), whatever top is clean and a scraped up top knot.

The Selfie Addict:

Spotting the Selfie Addict is as easy as finding a smartphone in the gym. This creature spends more time capturing the perfect angle for their Instagram feed than actually breaking a sweat. With every rep, they pause to strike a pose and pout for the camera. Remember, it’s not a workout unless it’s documented with the perfect filter, right? Probably the one that annoys me the most. Not because they’re capturing their workout, but the fact I’ve got to wait ages for a machine while they do their highlight reels.

The Cardio Bunny:

Behold the Cardio Bunny, perpetually hopping from one cardio machine to another. They can be seen effortlessly gliding on the elliptical, spinning on the bike, and briskly walking on the treadmill. Their cardio routine is legendary, but you won’t catch them anywhere near the weights. Who needs dumbbells when you have the endurance of a marathon runner? This actually used to me be back in my early 20’s before I realised just how good lifting weights was. Oh all the time I wasted on that cross trainer.

The Chatterbox:

The Chatterbox is a social butterfly who turns every workout into a never-ending gossip session. They’ll strike up conversations with anyone within a five-foot radius, even if you’re mid-set or panting for breath. Whether it’s the latest drama or their cat’s peculiar eating habits, the Chatterbox is always ready for a chat. The best way to avoid this is to wear headphones, even if you’re not listening to anything!

The Hulk Impersonator:

Watch out for the Hulk Impersonator, a human embodiment of pure muscle and brute strength. Their veins pop, and their biceps bulge as they lift weights that seem impossible for mere mortals. They’ll intimidate you with their gruff demeanor, but deep down, they’re usually teddy bears. Just don’t make the mistake of challenging them to an arm-wrestling match.

The gym is a treasure trove of eccentric characters and hilarious moments. From the Grunter to the Selfie Addict. Each gym persona brings its unique charm to the fitness world.
